Who else agrees that moms are simply the best?

Back in 2020, my mom sent me a link to the Ankarsrum mixer as we were diving deeper into sourdough baking. I was intrigued, did some research, and ended up convincing my sister and dad that we should surprise her with one for Mother’s Day.

That summer, during COVID, I borrowed her Ankarsrum while my parents headed south for the winter. At the time, I had another mixer that was hanging on by a thread—it would turn on sporadically if left plugged in. Four years later, I still have her Light Crème Ankarsrum (with her blessing), and she now has the Black Chrome version to match their upgraded kitchen. I love it. Even now, living in a small mobile home on the farm with very limited counter space, it remains a staple in my kitchen.

I wanted to share 5 things about me as a baker/cook—and 5 things about the Ankarsrum—for anyone thinking about buying one, or just needing a little inspiration to put theirs to good use.

5 Things About Me as a Baker/Cook:

  1. I’m a “wing it” kind of cook.
Outside of a few tried-and-true recipes (mostly my mom’s), I usually jump online, find something that looks good, and hope I have most of the ingredients. If not? I make it work. Sometimes it works out. Sometimes… not so much.

  2. Precision isn’t my strong suit.
I know baking is supposed to be exact, but honestly, I tend to eyeball and improvise. Slowing down to read instructions fully just isn’t in my DNA—but I'm okay with that and we still eat delicious food

  3. I value whole, home-cooked food.
Living on the farm is a ton of work, but the rewards are immense. We drink milk from our cows, eat meat we raise ourselves, get eggs from our neighbors, and my mother-in-law grows a gorgeous garden that feeds us through the winter. I also source quality grains and flour for baking.

  4. I believe in using what you have.
Whether it's ingredients or appliances, I try to make things work before upgrading or replacing. If you follow me on instagram and see my muffin tin - that is a great example, it was a hand me down from mom and every time I post a video with it she reminds me it might be time for a new one.

  5. I love tools that earn their space.
Especially now, living in tight quarters, anything that stays on the counter has to prove its worth. The Ankarsrum does—every day.

5 Things About the Ankarsrum:

  1. It’s a true kitchen assistant.
Aptly named “Assistent Original,” it’s versatile and reliable. Want to make four loaves of sourdough at once? No problem. Hosting brunch? It’ll mix muffins, grate cheese for quiche, and even whip cream on a whim.

  2. It’s built for bread—and beyond.
Yes, it’s known for its bread-making strength (and rightly so), but it’s capable of so much more—if you let it shine.

  3. It earns its premium price.
While it’s not a budget appliance, it’s an investment that pays off. That said, it doesn’t bake for you—you still need to set it up right.

  4. It requires a learning curve—but it’s worth it.
I’ve worked with home bakers across Canada and seen some frustration when it doesn't "just work." But if something’s not mixing right, I’ve learned it’s usually user error, not the machine.

  5. It fits real life.
Especially in a time when fast, easy, and pre-made is the norm, tools like this help us return to real, whole food—and do it well.

Whether you're just starting your baking journey or are knee-deep in sourdough, the Ankarsrum is a workhorse worth considering. And for me, it's also a reminder of my mom’s thoughtfulness and how a simple gift can become an everyday essential. Now, off to try the raspberries scones I just attempted to make. They don't look pretty but I think they will be delicious!
